Relationship Advice and Black Metal Wednesday; The Balance of Power and Forgotten Woods- As The Wolves Gather (1994)

Now in my 30’s I’ve noticed that relationships have a definite balance of power, in the good ones it is subtle and compliments each partners individual strengths and weaknesses. That is, in the long term ones, I’m not claiming any sort of special insight here, it is just apparent. I saw this chick at the bar the other day that I went to high school with, can’t remember her name, anyway, she was with an older guy with a few grey strands of hair left, a gut and an expensive SUV. She had too much weight on her too, so it was obvious that this was a long term relationship, no kids I’d guess also. What’s-her-name never was that bright, but evidently she does know when to shut up. Visibly smarter than some 32 year old liberated woman who has never been married. Yes, smarter because no matter what one’s income or place in life having a wife/husband to share in the finances and expenses and hardships makes sense.
Now if one encounters a woman in her 30’s who has never been married, with no children, then she obviously has control issues, at the very least. A decent looking woman doesn’t have a hard time meeting men, and if she doesn’t have children, that means that she would rather have more control than money. That said, don’t expect, as a man, to have the upper hand in the relationship because she has obviously already settled that issue with her ex’s. The “liberated” one has already made it clear that she values control, thus, if she doesn’t get what she wants, it’s over. Duh, why do you think she’s single? One doesn’t see perfectly good flesh-lites lying around unclaimed for the same reason reasonable, sane women don’t stay single for long.
Yes, yes, liberated women are generally real fun in bed, and yes, there are plenty of men out there that need to be told what to do. However, single women in their 30’s aren’t looking for long-term relationship despite claims to the contrary because they are single and there aren’t flesh-lites lying around. Yeah, they’re cool and fun to hang out with because they have not developed any other hobbies, but don’t expect to ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after with a woman who has already made it obvious that she doesn’t want that.
There are a lot of guys out there trying to make relationships work with these women and they basically have neutered themselves in the attempt to appease these women, oblivious to the fact that these are temporary patches, not solutions. These chicks will find a guy that is a bit desperate and totally take advantage of it and boss him around to no end. Then, if the male ever asserts himself or otherwise acts like he has balls, the girl throws a temper-tantrum and “ends” the relationship.

As the Wolves Gather was released back in 1994 by the Norwegians, Forgotten Woods, regarded as one of the first to play in a Depressive Black metal style and still relatively unknown to this day. Good, easy to listen to, likely their best album, 90%.

Lifelover- promo (2005)

This is Lifelover’s ambient promo album. It gets a scathing review on Metallum, but I like it. Lifelover’s style varies so much album to album that this is just an experiment with a different sound. It is defiantly music that one has to be in the mood for, but that can be said for all of their albums and anything ambient or depressive also.
I would say that their discography seems incomplete until one listens to this album, it is not a “great” release with a monotonous and repetitive pace and little outright guitar playing and more distortion than anything, it is a collector’s item for the digital library. Released on tape originally no one is going to bother buying, but as a .zip file it is a must have for any “real” metal head’s hard drive, so enjoy, as much as possible.

Lifelover- Pulver (2006)

Leftover is depressive black metal from Sweden, their sound has post-rock and post-metal influences while the lyrics center around, of course, drugs and misery.
The genius behind this project was B, who would cut himself on stage and was more than a little off. Yes, I know, I know, most “cutters” are insecure and just crying out for attention, however B was close to a musical genius and I don’t believe he was insecure, more crazy and on drugs, which makes great music. Unfortunately the mental instability comes with a price and evidently he ate too many bars (zanax) and died last year (September 9, 2011).
The band disbanded saying that B was too great of an influence to replace, the tour that he died upon continued, but as a tribute tour.
