Hurricane Party 2022

The thing with hurricanes is that they don’t care. They’re kind of assholes that way. Yet it still seems unlucky to speak poorly of them. Spending days and weeks sweating in the Florida heat and humidity of late summer without electricity, cooking every meal on a grill changes a person. Camping out in a disaster zone loses it’s novelty once the temperature reaches 90 degrees and the mosquitoes repellent runs out.

However, it is a respite from the mundane routine of day to day life. Hurricanes come, disrupt the routine and force everyone to stop what they are doing for a while. The best case scenario is that there is little damage and no trees that need to be cleaned up and no work with the power (and thus air conditioning) restored within a couple of days and everyone gets a couple days off from work.

That is what the hurricane party celebrates; the start of hurricane season and the tongue-in-cheek possibility of a short period of required inactivity, grilling and drinking. With that theme Sanford Florida kicks off the season with a street party/ festival with live music and a bunch of food trucks selling all kinds of yummies. The garlic knot slider truck was my favorite and the music was… ok. My daughter would label it White Boy Regge, which is funny and accurate.

The only band that really impressed me was a band from Tampa called Horizon. Which is not a good band name making it almost impossible to look them up. Their sound-check took as long as their set, which seemed excessive until they started playing. Once the set started I appreciated the care that went into the sound-check because I could clearly hear everything. While not being a huge fan of W.B.R., Horizon puts on a damn good show.

The Hurricane Party was a lot of fun with great food and decent music. Highly recommended if one is in central Florida for the start of hurricane season.
